What Is The Atkins Diet?

The Atkins Diet is from a book called Dr. Atkins’ New Diet Revolution by the late Robert C Atkins, MD. Dr. Atkins said the way your body processes the carbohydrates you eat – not how much fat you eat – causes you to gain weight.

Worried about his weight problem Dr Atkins began searching through some medical magazines. He came across something that would change the course of his life.

Forbidden Foods:

This is a low-carb, high protein diet, so say good-bye to processed, pre-packaged and junk foods (cookies, sodas, etc.) and hello to steaks, burgers, cheese and fish.

Unlike the traditional diets, the Atkins diet places dietary emphasis on protein sources as opposed to whole grain foods. Additionally, the Atkins plan doesn’t set limits on the amount of food you eat. It only sets limits on the type of food you eat.

For example, you cannot eat white rice or foods made with white flour like cake or pasta, but you can eat a large amount of fish, poultry, red meat, eggs and cheese.

These foods are made up mostly of protein and fat, as opposed to carbohydrates. Furthermore, Atkins is different from most diets in that you don’t need to count calories. In fact, many people on Atkins consume more calories than they were before the diet (one gram of fat contains 9 calories, while one gram of any carbohydrate contains 4 calories).

Since the Atkins diet occurs in four phases, what you can eat will differ slightly in each phase. As you go through the phases, you are allowed more and more carbohydrates, but they should consist mostly of fibre-rich carbohydrates like leafy greens and certain vegetables. White rice, white bread, potatoes and pasta made from “white” or processed flour remain forbidden-foods for the duration of the Atkins plan.

Forget about yogurt, fruit and starchy vegetables like potatoes. If you consume alcohol or caffeine, you’re going to have to say “sayonara” to those beverages as well.

I’m an Atkins success story dating back to 1981. By following his original plan, I lost 100 pounds, and have maintained it.

Who fails on the Atkins diet? For starters, who should use the Atkins diet? Before you decide to undertake any WOE (way of eating), you must determine whether it is right for you. Atkins is specifically beneficial to insulin resistant or diabetes prone individuals. It also works for those genetically predisposed to heart disease. In my case, it works well for me because I have chemical sensitivities.

If you are NOT genetically predisposed to diabetes, do NOT have a history of heart disease, or do NOT have blood Type O Atkins is probably not the diet for you. Studies have shown that folks with blood types A and B should not follow a low carbohydrate regimen. Their body types fare better on diets consisting of whole grains, fruits and vegetables. Around 85% of the U.S. population has the blood type O, respectively. So, Atkins will not work for 15% of the U.S. population. For the remaining 85%, a diet will not work unless it is followed correctly.

The person who says, “I have followed the diet and the scale did not move for me.” “I gained weight instead of losing.” “The diet made me sick.” You either were not following the plan correctly or the diet is not for your blood type.

If you prepare your meals at home, the Atkins diet contains a minimal amount of processed foods. For the record, I do not consume regular bacon or sausage but use Canadian bacon due to my allergies. My blood pressure rests at 95/63. My blood cholesterol is 140; my triglycerides are 40. My doctor raves about my profile. He can’t believe I consume a dozen eggs weekly. I am a very healthy person.

What the Atkins diet is not: this diet is not a license to stuff your face. Several people take his “eat until you are satisfied” quote to infer they can sit down and lose it all at the table every meal. Besides taxing your digestive system, you will end up eating too many carbohydrates. Dr. Atkins said until you are satisfied’, not until you cannot move’. That is not satisfaction; it is gluttony. Atkins never endorsed gluttony.

You must count your carbohydrates. An egg contains one carbohydrate. Yes, it does. Become a label reader, understand your limitations; exercise some self control. Read the book. It plainly states when making an omelet, for example, that each egg should count as one carbohydrate when calculating

While I have tried a great deal of diets in my search for the ultimate combination of ways to lose the weight from my wife’s pregnancy… you know, my sympathy weight, the Coconut Diet just seemed rediculous. Other major benefits of coconut oil is it’s use in treating symptoms of Diabetes, IBS, Crohns, and a large variety of digestive disorders.

The Coconut Oil is natural, comes in a capsules, gel, liquid form, powder form or you could just consume it through eating actual coconuts or coconut milk. The oil is sold generally through health food stores, and has been long tauted as a potential miracle ingredient that is virtually tasteless and easy to add to other foods.

The best way to stick to your New Years resolution is fairly simple. Be realistic! Every year I hear people saying things like this year I’m going to quit smoking, lose 20 pounds, work-out more, or (my favorite) become a better person. My only question is what exactly does this entail? Can you really become a better person within a year? Our expectations are set way too high and that is the source of our failure.

Year after year I tell myself I’m going to lose weight this year. Well, there seems to be a domino-effect occuring within my aspirations. As I fail to lose weight one year, the same thing goes for the next, and the next, and so on. What we fail to realize is that by keeping things simpler by choosing to opt for non-fat lattes at Starbucks or water on dates instead of soda for example, we are better able and more likely to follow through.

Think about it. How much more likely is it for you to drink less soda or regular lattes than for you to just up and lose 20 pounds? We need to make realistic short term goals rather than say “this year I’m going to get my body to look like Brad Pitt’s.” Everyone struggles with something in some aspect of their lives, but their is no magic wand to fix all of our problems. The only way to get where we want to be is to look at things on a day-to-day basis.

Yes, New Years resolutions are a great thing. They allow us to put our priorities in order and work towards something we strive to accomplish, but there is no point in setting ourselves up for failure. The best way to stick to your new years resolution is the only way. Create your long term goal a.k.a your New Years resolution then set up short term goals to assist with it.

For example, if my New Years Resolution for 2009 is to lose 10 pounds I would have a weekly or maybe even a monthly goal. In January I would focus on a healthier diet. Cutting down on fast food to a maximum of 2 times a month. Then in February I would focus on another aspect of my diet, and eventually incorporate exercise. The key is to take things slow and ease your way into it.

Don’t just think that by setting that New Years resolution you’re going to wake-up 20 pounds thinner or an entirely new person who won’t so much as look at the McDonald’s drive-thru on the way home. I am a 5′4” woman who weighs 190lbs. My dream in life is to sing on tv…be a famous singer…and to see my great grandchildren graduate from college.There are a number of factors that are influencing me to lose weight.And to lose weight right.First, my father was obese most of his life.He passed away in 2003 from congestive heart failure.He was a diabetic.
